Greyhound Racing Ireland (GRI) has been advised by its PR consultants to refrain from commenting on New Zealand’s recent decision to ban greyhound racing by 2026.
The ban was instated due to concerns over high injury rates among dogs.
In internal discussions, GRI sought guidance on how to respond to media inquiries about the New Zealand ban, particularly following a similar decision in Wales.
GRI’s PR advisers warned that speaking on the matter would force them to address issues beyond their knowledge, advising that “once you are explaining, you are losing”.
Instead, they suggested issuing a general statement that highlighted the importance of the Irish greyhound industry, its growing attendance figures, and commitment to animal welfare.
As GRI continued to face media pressure, there were also internal discussions about whether a breeder could publicly speak on the issue, with some suggesting that a recent UK interview on the topic was not challenging enough.
A proposed ban on greyhound racing in New Zealand and Wales will see Ireland stand alongside Australia, England, Scotland, USA, and Spain where this activity remains legal.
