Irish Animal Welfare Organisations Reject ‘Heather for President’ Campaign

Irish animal welfare organisations have rejected the ‘Heather for President’ campaign being conducted by Heather Humphreys in Ireland’s upcoming presidential election campaign.

The 2025 Irish presidential election is due to take place on 24 October 2025. Voters currently have a choice of three candidates, including Heather Humphreys who represents the Fine Gael party. The other candidates are; Jim Gavin, Fianna Fáil and Catherine Connelly, Independent.

The Irish Council Against Bloodsports (ICABS) have highlighted the animal welfare issues record of Ms Humphreys.

In 2013, she voted against an amendment to the Animal Health and Welfare Bill which sought to outlaw hare coursing in Ireland.

She also voted against an amendment to the Bill which sought to outlaw fox hunting, terrierwork, digging out, ferreting, badger culling and the use of animals in circus performances.

Irish hare abuse to continue.

The annual hare netting and hare tagging licences have been issued to the Irish Coursing Club and its 88 affiliated coursing clubs. Hare coursing is administered by the Irish Coursing Club (ICC) which is a body set up under the Greyhound Industry Act 1958.

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne, issued the licences on the 24th of July.

Under the licence, it will be legal to capture live hares by means of nets between 8 August 2025 and 28 February 2026 subject to thirty-seven conditions. These apply to the conduct of hare coursing and to the treatment of captured hares.

The licence to attach a numbered tag to hares taken in accordance with a licence issued under Section 34 of the Wildlife Acts during the period beginning on 8 August 2025 and ending on 28 February 2026 is subject to seven conditions in respect of tagging and releasing captured hares.

Greyhound Kennel Horror Uncovered in the West of Ireland

A greyhound kennel horror story has been uncovered.

Greyhound Racing Ireland (GRI) have confirmed that a serious welfare incident involving greyhounds has been uncovered at a registered premises in late April.

Initial reports are saying that many greyhounds were found dead and that other greyhounds are missing.

The exact location where the incident took place has not been revealed, but it understood to be in the west of the country.

Prompted by escalating concerns following welfare inspections at the premises, GRI stated they took “immediate intervention,” involving their own officials and veterinary professionals.

As a result, a welfare notice has been issued to the owner, effectively prohibiting them from keeping greyhounds and aiming to prevent any further harm.

Irish Taxpayers €1.7m Animal Abuse Funding

Irish taxpayers’ money is being used to fund hunting with hounds in Ireland.

Horse Racing Ireland, which is funded by the Government, has given out €1.7 million more in grants to hunts around Ireland – funding that is helping to sustain one of the country’s worst forms of cruelty to animals.

Paul Murphy TD recently obtained figures that revealed that in 2024 Irish hunts received €1,794,300 in point-to-point racing grants from Horse Racing Ireland.
Point-to-points are horse races organised by hunt clubs. They are a significant source of income for hunts and effectively prop up the bloodsport clubs.

Hare Abuse to Continue in the Republic of Ireland

Live hare coursing is to continue in the Republic of Ireland.

The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne has said that he has no plans to withdraw current licences for hare coursing and that this activity will continue to have legal status.

This was in response to a parliamentary question from People Before Profit-Solidarity TD, Paul Murphy which asked the Minister Browne if he will refuse 2025-2026 hare netting licences for coursing because the “cruel activity” causes a serious disturbance to the Irish hare, and is in breach of Article 15 of the EU Habitats Directive.

Hare Coursing – 81% of journal.ie Readers Want a Ban

Nearly 82% of journnal.ie readers want a ban on hare coursing.

In a recent online poll hosted by the journal.ie which asked the question, Should Hare Coursing Be Banned? viewers voted in support of banning this barbaric activity.

The poll findings (as of the 20th April) showed that 81. 5% agreed that hare coursing should be banned, 15.3% said no while 3.2% were unsure.

This rejection of using the Irish Hare as a live lure will add to calls for this activity to be banned.
