At Naas District Court on Monday 3rd March 2025, Chloe Walker Reid (25) with an address at Cnoc Na Greine, Kilcullen, Co Kildare and James Boland (26) of Oldgrange, Monasterevin, Co Kildare pleaded guilty to three offences each under sections 11 and 12 of the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013 in a horse cruelty case.
Naas District Court heard harrowing details of the horse’s condition, revealing a shocking lack of care.
ISPCA Inspector James McCormack responded to a report in January 2023 and found a chestnut gelding in a field, visibly emaciated, unsteady, and in clear distress.
The horse’s condition was so dire that a vet assigned it a body condition score of 0 out of 5, indicating extreme emaciation.
Diagnosed with chronic colitis, the horse was ultimately euthanized to prevent further suffering.
Both Walker Reid and Boland, who worked in the equine sector, admitted to neglecting the horse and failing to seek veterinary attention, citing financial constraints or a rapid decline in the horse’s condition.
Judge Desmond Zaidan expressed his outrage, stating that the horse “must have been in hell” and suffered preventable pain.
The court imposed five-month custodial sentences on both defendants, to run concurrently, and ordered them to pay over €1,000 in veterinary fees to the ISPCA.
An appeal was lodged after the hearing.
Inspector McCormack commented: “This was a very sad case to see a beautiful horse in obvious pain and suffering that went on over a period of weeks, and it led to the horse having to be euthanised to prevent further suffering. It is not okay to allow an animal to suffer such pain and it is every animal owner’s responsibility to provide a level of care and kindness to all animals in their care. We continue to work on behalf of all neglected animals and we will continue to bring these cases before the courts”.
